Where there is free food; there is Manolo.
Hey, you can’t blame him when you take a look at today’s menu, courtesy of Xpress Chefs. (And HMSA, and Servco)
Let’s get the mahalo’s in first. Mahalo to HMSA (again) for backing the Fresh Flavors Cooking Demonstrations. And another large round of applause to Servco (again) for supplying one of their fully and professionally equipped kitchens for this morning’s feast. And an especially big mahalo to Chef Frank Chun of Xpress Chefs. (We will refrain from giving ourselves at KHON a pat on the back…or did we just do that?)
So, you nevah hear of Xpress Chefs? Thanks for askin’. The story goes like this: last year, the folks at Lanakila Meals on Wheels decided they needed to come up with an income stream they could count on. (And they really need income streaming in.)
Digression: Who is Lanakila? Lanakila is/are all of the good folks who volunteer their time, energy, cars and cash to provide up to 1,700 meals a day for our senior citizens. But as you may know from watching KHON News, demand has been outstripping Lanakila’s financial ability to supply the desperately needed Meals on Wheels program. End of digression.
In spite of tremendous public support, some recent five-figure donations from local businesses and help from local food stores, Lanakila is still some $147,000 short of keeping 164 folks fed for the rest of the year. Hoping to prevent that gap from getting any wider, and maybe even closing it a tad, they came up with the idea of Xpress Chefs, under the guidance of culinary wizard Frank Chun.
It’s a catering company; with all the profits going back to Lanakila! More income to Lanakila, more meals for the senior community. But don’t for one-second think that the problem is solved; not by a long shot. They’ve still got that $147,000 shortfall to worry about. And that, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is where you come in. Your support is needed.
Check out today’s menu. Check out the expression on Manolo’s face. Need we say more? Greek Salad; Linguini with Tomato, Basil and Capers; Italian Skillet Chicken; Tropical Fruit Salad. ONO!
